Apus Ϯ Common Swift A. apus) Genus Apus Scopoli, 1777, swift  < L. apus, apodis  swift, type of swallow said to have no feet  < Gr. απους apous, αποδος apodos  bird of the swallow kind  < negative prefix α- a- ; πους pous, ποδος podos  foot; "Obs. Ainsi Mitella L. Mitchella L. & Michelia L. peuvent être conservés; mais parmi Apis L. Apus Cuvier, Apium L. & Apion Herbst, on ne doit conserver qu'Apium L. les autres doivent être changés en Apicula R. Apodium R. & Apionus R." (Rafinesque 1814); "Apodium Rafinesque, 1814, Principes Fondamentaux de Somiologie, p. 29.  New name for Apus Cuvier, i.e. Scopoli, 1777, because of its similarity to the genera Apis, Apium and Apion (which were also given new names)."
