L. dilutus  weak, diluted, resolved, thin, soft  < diluere  to dissolve  < dis  separate, apart; luere  to make good.
● “Atlapetes pileatus dilutus.  CHIHUAHUAN PILEATED SPARROW.   Similar to A. pileatus (Wagler) but averaging smaller, with smaller and more slender bill, grayer upper parts, and yellow of under parts paler and duller.” (Ridgway 1898) (subsp. Atlapetes pileatus).
