Aythya † New Zealand Scaup A. novaeseelandiae) Portmanteau of toponym New Zealand, and genus Fuligula Stephens, 1824, duck (< L. fuligo, fuliginis  soot) (cf. genus Fulix Sundevall, 1836, duck (<  L. fulix, fuligis  coot)); "Genus Fuligula Stephens, 1824, tautotype Anas fuligula Linné.   Zeafulix sub-gen. nov.   Type Anas novæseelandiæ Gm.   The type of this new genus differs from the type of Fuligula in lacking the long head crest" (Mathews 1937) (OD per Mark Brown); "Zeafulix Mathews, 1937, Emu, XXXVII (1), p. 32.  Type, by original designation, Anas novaeseelandiae Gmelin, 1789."
