Macroramphus

(Anatidae; syn. Melanitta Surf Scoter M. perspicillata) Gr. μακρος makros  great; ῥαμφος rhamphos  bill; "IIe Sous-Genre. MACRORAMPHE, macroramphus.  Bec large, épais, à mandibule supérieure épaisse, à arête formant un élargissement à l'extrémité de la mandibule supérieure; yeux placés au milieu même de la membrane nue qui entoure la base du bec.   Type: le canard du nord, appelé le marchand, Buff., enl. 995 (anas perspicillata, L.)   ...   C'est, dit-on, le coot des habitans de New-York" (Lesson 1828); "Macroramphus Lesson, 1828, Manuel d'Ornithologie, II, p. 414.  Type, by original designation, Anas perspicillata Linnaeus, 1758."
