intermedea / intermedia / intermedianus / intermedium / intermedius

L. intermedius  intermediate, that is between (cf. Late L. intermedium  intervention, between two others; Med. L. intermedium  interval).  These epithets are common in ornithology, highlighting forms considered to have intermediate plumage, size, distribution, etc.; a selection is shown below.
● “Genus Ardea.   ...   A. intermedia.  ...  Habitat in insula Java.  Simillima habitu ac colore Ardeae flavirostri, eadem dimidio fere minor.” (Wagler 1829) (Ardea).
● "2.  Bolbopsittacus intermedius.  ...  As B. lunulatus and B. mindanensis seem to be respectively confined to Luzon and Mindanao, it is very likely that the present bird lives in some of the intermediate islands." (Salvadori 1891) (subsp. Bolbopsittacus lunulatus).
● "32.  Textor intermedius, Taf. XI, von erythrorhynchus durch die nicht weisse Innenseite des Flügels, welcher daselbst nur einen weissgrauen Fleck zeigt, und durch weniger ausgebreitete Ränder an der Oberseite des Flügels verschieden." (Cabanis 1868) (subsp. Bubalornis niger).
● "Then he has brought me several specimens of an Arachnechthra, which he fancied was A. lotenia; but it is smaller, and has the deep purple-black abdomen of A. currucaria, which these specimens in fact resemble in every particular, except that they are slightly larger, and their bills conspicuously so.  This difference is constant, and, coupled with the somewhat larger and more brilliant axillary tufts, seems to demand specific separation.  The difference in the bills of the two races is most marked.  Taking Mr. Gould's figures (B. As. pt. vii.) of A. currucaria and A. lotenia, the bill of  A. INTERMEDIA, as I propose designating the Tipperah race, is exactly intermediate, and these figures correspond accurately with numerous specimens in my collection.  Actual measurements scarcely convey an adequate idea of the marked difference in size" (Hume 1870) (subsp. Cinnyris asiaticus).
● "N. chalybea  ...  N. chloropygia.  Si de nouvelles observations venaient confirmer l'existence chez d'autres individus en plumage de nôces des particularités, que nous avons constatées chez nos individus de Caconda, il y aurait lieu sans doute d'établir une nouvelle espèce sous le nom de N. intermedia" (Barboza du Bocage 1878) (syn. Cinnyris chalybeus pintoi).
● "73.  Coracina papuensis papuensis Gm.   ...   The birds from the Snow Mts. are exactly intermediate between C. p. papuensis from N. W. New Guinea and C. p. meekiana from S. E. New Guinea; so I propose to call the race found on the south side of the Central Range.   Coracina papuensis intermedia subsp. nov." (Rothschild 1931) (subsp. Coracina papuensis).
● "2.  Bessornis intermedia, Taf. XII, kleiner und mit dunklerer Unterseite als Heuglini, der weisse Superciliarstreif schmäler aber länger." (Cabanis 1868) (subsp. Cossypha heuglini).
● "3.  DENDROCOLAPTES  INTERMEDIUS, sp. nov.  ...  It is not easy to explain the specific characters of this new species in comparison with D. validus, Tschud., and D. picumnus, Licht., as it is, in fact, somewhat intermediate between the two" (von Berlepsch 1883) (subsp. Dendrocolaptes platyrostris).
Eudromia elegans).
● "Formicivora   ...   F. grisea  ...  Kommt in Brasilien, Cayenne und Guiana vor.   ...   F. rufatra  ...  Vaterland: Brasilien und Bolivien.   ...   F. intermedia.  ...  Vaterland: Columbien" (Cabanis 1847) (subsp. Formicivora grisea).
● "Falco pondicerianus apud Horsfield is a race intermediate to Haliastur indus of India proper and H. leucosternum of Australia, having dark central streaks to the white portion of the plumage, but considerably less developed than (constantly) in the Indian bird..  ...  Of very many examples of the Indian race examined or beheld close, I certainly have never seen one that had the dark streaks or lines so little developed as in the Javanese bird, or most assuredly I should have remarked it.  To what extent the Indian and Australian races may thus grade into each other, in other intermediate localities, remains to be ascertained.  ...  Mr. Gurney informs me that he thinks the Javanese race should be distinguished by the name intermedius." (Blyth 1865) (subsp. Haliastur indus).
● "Sp. 81.  Hemipus intermedius, nov. sp.  ...  Questa specie pel colore nero lucente delle parti superiori somiglia all' H. picatus (Sykes) dell' India, mentre per l'estensione del bianco all' apice delle timoniere somiglia all' H. capitalis (Mac Clelland) del Nepal." (Salvadori 1879) (subsp. Hemipus picatus).
● "Inezia caudata intermedia subsp. nov.  ...  Similar to Inezia caudata caudata, but decidedly larger; the bill somewhat broader and the upper parts paler and more greenish olive; breast with slight wash of olive (not buffy); the chin whiter and the lores conspicuously pure white." (Cory 1913) (subsp. Inezia caudata).
● "Then we have in Tenasserim, most abundant in the hills, but extending in the cold weather to the sea-board and the plains of Pegu, a race of melaschistus, which I will, for convenience sake, denominate VOLVOCIVORA  INTERMEDIA.  It is very close to melaschistus, and as such I originally identified it, but with 24 specimens before me I find that sex being ascertained no specimen of it can be mistaken for a specimen of the corresponding sex of melaschistus, but it is much the same size, and the old males are nearly as possible the same colour as the females of melaschistus.  ...  I am very doubtful whether this should be considered a subspecies or not, but it is a very distinguishable and perfectly constant race, and not one single specimen of true melaschistus has occurred to us throughout the region in which it is so abundant, and it may be best therefore to characterize it by a distinct name." (Hume 1877) (subsp. Lalage melaschistos).
● "Parus afer.  ...  Type of P. afer intermedius.  Similar in plumage.  ...  Potchefstroom.   Type of P. afer parvirostris.  Similar in plumage.  ...  Salisbury.  ...  These races are alike in colouring and size with the exception of the bill, which decreases as we follow a line from Cape Town to Nyasa Lake." (Shelley 1900) (syn. Melaniparus cinerascens).
● "5.  SETOPHAGA  INTERMEDIA, Nob.  ...  Espèce typique intermédiaire entre la S. vulnerata et la S. verticalis, Lafresn.  Elle diffère de la première par un bec plus grand et plus large, par la gorge cendrée, par le coloris de la queue, par la couleur de l'abdomen; la S. verticalis, Lafr. est jaune d'œuf en dessous." (Hartlaub 1852) (subsp. Myioborus miniatus).
● "Pachyrhamphus intermedius Berlepsch sp. nov.   P. cinnamomeo Lawr. ex America centrali simillimus, differt plaga superciliari griseo-olivacea, colore supra pallidiore, rostro minore debiliore." (von Berlepsch 1879) (subsp. Pachyramphus castaneus).
● "Parus bocharensis var. intermedius, nob.  ...  Pendant les chaleurs de l'été, le plumage des oiseaux trans-caspiens s'use considérablement, ces indices s'effacent, de sorte qu'il est plus difficile de distinguer nos variétés les unes des autres.  ...  Dans le chant et les moeurs de ces deux formes, on ne remarque aucune différence, et il est douteux qu'il puisse y avoir une distinction biologique essentielle entre ces formes et la Parus major, dont le Par. boch. var. intermedius se rapproche également par quelques traits de coloration." (Zarudny 1890) (subsp. Parus major).
● "3. CRYPTOLOPHA  INTERMEDIA  La Touche, sp. n.   Near C. tephrocephala (Anders.) and C. affinis (Hodgs.).  Differs from the former in having a much shorter bill, and the secondary coverts distinctly tipped with pale yellow, forming a well-marked bar; from C. affinis it differs in having a ring of feathers round the eye, yellow." (La Touche 1898) (Phylloscopus).
● “728. —  Pipreola viridis intermedia  ...  Forme intermédiaire entre la P. viridis de la Bolivie et la P. melanolæma de l’Ecuador, plus voisine de la dernière.” (Taczanowski 1884) (Pipreola).
● "605.  Pitta versicolor intermedia subsp. n.   Intermediate Noisy Pitta.  ...  Intermediate in size between P. v. versicolor and P. v. simillima" (Mathews 1912) (subsp. Pitta versicolor).
● "Ploceus intermedius.  Sehr nahe mit meinem Ploceus larvatus verwandte Art.  Vorderkopf bis über den hintern Augenwinkel, Kehle, Oberhals und Ohrengegend schwarz, Hinterkopf und Nacken röthlich braungelb.  Mitte der Brust orangengelb, Seiten des Halses und Unterkörpers citrongelb.  Rücken gelbgrün, gegen den Schwanz hin citronengelb." (Rüppell 1845) (Ploceus).
● “This species is somewhat intermediate between Palaeornis schisticeps and P. cyanocephala in size and coloration, but is nearer P. schisticeps” (Rothschild 1895) (syn. Psittacula cyanocephala x Psittacula himalayana).
● "Cyclopsitta desmarestii intermedia, nov. subspec.  ...  This subspecies differs from Cyclopsitta desmarestii Garnot, from Dorei, by the brighter vermilion-orange pileum and hindneck, by the smaller occipital blue spot, which is sometimes absent, by the smaller and paler, rather greenish blue suborbital spot, which spot is larger than that in occidentalis and more pure blue.  The cheeks are green with orange tips to only a few feathers, the earcoverts are green, not golden yellow as in occidentalis, all the feathers with orange extremities." (van Oort 1909) (subsp. Psittaculirostris desmarestii).
● "Allotrius intermedius.   Like A. melanotis, Bly., but has a larger bill and a deep chestnut frontal band, and wants the broad slatey nuchal half collar and the black band behind the ear-coverts.  Like A. aenobarbus, Temm. but has a smaller bill, a much deeper chestnut frontal band, the chestnut of the throat descending to the abdomen and the grey supercilliary stripe prolonged as a wide band over the ear-coverts and completely round their ends.   I am afraid a great many of my readers will abuse me heartily for making such a number of new species, differing only in small particulars from already well-known ones.  I am very sorry, but the culprit is not this humble individual, but our great full-bosomed Mother Nature— let her bear the blame— her shoulders are broad enough and she recks little of the feeble words of us mortals." (Hume 1877) (Pteruthius).
● "RHIPIDURA  INTERMEDIA, sp. nov.  ...  Dr. Sharpe's description of Rhipidura rufifrons in the "Catalogue of Birds in the British Museum," vol. iv., p. 319 (1879), evidently applies to this species, for he describes the tail feathers as being "distinctly tipped with white."  The type of Rhipidura rufifrons characterized by Dr. Latham, was obtained in New South Wales, and has the tips of the tail feathers pale brown, not white.  In the latter respect Rhipidura intermedia agrees with R. torrida, described and figured (Proc. Zool. Soc., 1865, p. 477, pl. xxviii.) by Dr. Alfred Russel Wallace, from the island of Ternate, but R. torrida differs from R. intermedia in having the ear-coverts and upper breast black." (North 1902) (subsp. Rhipidura rufifrons).
● "Scytalopus unicolor intermedius, new subspecies.   ...   Similar to S. u. parvirostris of central and southwestern Perú and northwestern Bolivia, but darker in color and with a heavier bill.  Similar to S. u. latrans of Colombia, northern and eastern Ecuador, and parts of northern Perú, but males averaging a little paler gray, with more tendency toward a silvery sheen on the belly, and with paler brown feet.  ...  Differs from S. u. subcinereus of the western side of the Andes of northern Perú and southern Ecuador by average darker color and by heavier and usually shorter bill.  ...  As in other related forms, the plumages between the obvious juvenal and the fully adult are variously intermediate." (J. Zimmer 1939) (Scytalopus).
● "917.  Sericornis lathami intermedia subsp. n.  Allied Yellow-throated Scrub Wren  ...  Differs from S. l. lathami in its darker head; otherwise intermediate between S. l. lathami and S. l. cairnsensis." (Mathews 1912) (subsp. Sericornis citreogularis).
● "Sericornis spilodera intermedia, new subspecies  ...  Batanta, off western New Guinea  ...  This population is intermediate between the populations of western New Guinea (spilodera) and the population of the island of Waigeu (ferruginea)." (Greenway 1966) (syn. Sericornis spilodera batantae).
● "Sp. intermedia n. sp.  ...
● "Thamnistes anabatinus intermedius subsp. nov.  ...  This form, based on but one specimen, is clearly an intermediate between T. æquatorialis of eastern Ecuador and southeastern Colombia, and the quite different T. anabatinus group of Panama to Mexico.  Its crown and back closely agree in color with those of æquatorialis while the underparts are similar to those of T. a. coronatus; the tail and wings externally are intermediate but nearer to those of coronatus." (Chapman 1914) (subsp. Thamnistes anabatinus).
● "33.  Thamnophilus intermedius, sp. nov.   SP. CHAR.—Adult male: Similar to that of T. nigricristatus LAWR., but bill larger, and feathers of crest largely white in middle portion; adult female similar to that of T. doliatus, but with larger bill." (Ridgway 1888) (subsp. Thamnophilus doliatus).
● "24.  Trichoglossus haematodus intermedius subsp. nov.   A series of eight specimens of Lories from Kaiser Wilhelm's Land stand somewhat between cyanogrammus and massena.  They agree with cyanogrammus in the broad edges to the red breast-feathers, and with massena in the colouration of the head, the ear-coverts not being blue, but with a greenish tinge, the centre of the crown with green streaks, the nape dark cherry-brown or reddish." (Rothschild & Hartert 1901) (subsp. Trichoglossus haematodus).
● “38.  Troglodytes intermedius n. sp.  T. supra murino-brunneus, alis caudaque anguste nigro-transfasciatis; subtus cum superciliis fulvescente-brunneus; hypochondriis crissoque dilutioribus, rufescentibus; tectricibus subcaudalibus rufescentibus, nigro transversim fasciatis, maculis nonnullis albescentibus intermixtis.  Similis haec species americano et platensi, quasi intermedia.” (Cabanis 1860) (subsp. Troglodytes aedon).
● "ZOSTEROPS  INTERMEDIA.  ...  Very near Z. flava, but a little larger, more yellow on the forehead and less on the upper tail-coverts, and the black subocular streak not extending so far forward  ...  Hab. Macassar and Lombock.   Remark.—Mr. G. R. Gray attached the MS. name of intermedius to my Macassar specimen." (Wallace 1864) (subsp. Zosterops chloris).
