(Podicipedidae; syn. Podiceps  Great Grebe P. major) Portmanteau of genera Podiceps Latham, 1787, grebe, and Aechmophorus Coues, 1862, grebe; "Therefore, it is proposed here to create a new monotypic genus for the species "P." major (BODDAERT, 1783).   Podicephorus genus nov.  ...  Differs from the other genera in its combination of osteological characters and proportions of body size (PCA and cluster analysis).  Type species of Podicephorus gen. nov.: Colymbus major BODDAERT, 1783; by present designation  ...  The new generic name depicts distant similarities of the genus to Podiceps and Aechmophorus.  Judging from the behavioural and morphological evidence, Podicephorus major is closer to the Poliocephalus-Podiceps-Aechmophorus complex than to any other genera" (Bocheński 1994); "Podicephorus Bocheński, 1994, Acta Zoologica Cracoviensia, 37 (1), p. 341.  Type, by original designation, Colymbus major Boddaert, 1783."
