- Pterocyanea
(Anatidae; syn. Spatula † Garganey S. querquedula) Gr. πτερον pteron wing; κυανεος kuaneos dark-blue, glossy; "220. PTEROCYANEA, Bp. Cyanopterus, Eyt. Querquedula, Kaup. 439. P. CIRCIA, Bp. Anas querquedula, et circia, L. Gould t. 364" (Bonaparte 1841); "Pterocyanea Bonaparte, Icon. Faun. Ital. Ucc. Introd. (p. 17) 1841. Type (by monotypy): Anas circia = A. querquedula Linné." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 218). This genus may have been created in response to the preoccupation of Cyanopterus Eyton, 1838, not of Haliday, 1835 (Hymenoptera).
Var. Pterocyana.
