Introduction

The Andaman Bulbul is a medium-sized (~19 cm) bulbul endemic to the Andaman archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The head is crestless. The plumage is olive green above and bright yellow below; the breeding male has a brighter yellow abdomen and darker head than the female and immatures. It prefers evergreen and deciduous forests with dense understory and avoids human-modified areas. Until the early 2000s, it was considered a sub-species of the widely distributed Black-headed Bulbul (Microtarsus melanocephalos). It is a less-studied species, and various aspects of its natural history (including feeding, breeding, and movements) are little known. It forages mostly on berries and also consumes insects. It is seen in pairs and joins mixed-flock foraging. Generally considered uncommon across its distribution range, no study has systematically documented the population status. Based on available citizen-science data analyzed by the State of India's Birds, the long-term trend (pre-2000 to 2018) suggests a stable population, while the current trend (2014 to 2022) is "inconclusive" due to lack of data. It is classified as of Least concern by the IUCN Red List and as a species of Moderate conservation concern in the State of India's Bird Report 2023.
