Introduction

Both the Andaman Flowerpecker and the Nilgiri Flowerpecker (Dicaeum concolor) were long considered to be subspecies of the geographically widespread Plain Flowerpecker (Dicaeum minullum), but have recently been split on account of relatively small differences in plumage and apparently also in voice. Nevertheless, a genetic perspective on their relationships would be welcome. Like these other species, Dicaeum virescens is a small flowerpecker with a relatively long, slightly curved bill, rather bright olive-green upperparts, speckled darker on the crown, dark centers to the wing-coverts, a glossy black tail, a mottled grayish breast, and bright pale yellow belly. This species is very widespread across the Andaman archipelago, where it appears to be present in forested or wooded areas on most of the main islands. Virtually nothing has been published concerning the Andaman Flowerpecker’s ecology, including its breeding, foraging, and diet.
