Field Identification

There is considerable variation in wing and tail length, both within and between the two currently recognized subspecies. Baker (5) provided the following measurements (in mm) of individuals collected in different parts of the range:

Region Subspecies Mean wing length (+ range) Tail length (range) No. of specimens
Northern India dicruroides 140.3 (134‒147) 106‒133 27
Ceylon stewarti 126.5 (123‒131) 126‒141 9

More recently, Payne (6) provided more detailed mensural data for stewarti, as follows:

Males (n = 18) Females (n = 14)
Wing length 121‒135 (127.3 ± 4.5) 119‒141 (128.5 ± 6.5)
Tail length 118‒147 (130.4 ± 7.9) 104‒140 (120.6 ± 9.0)
Bill length 16.8‒20.2 (18.3 ± 1.2) 17.4‒19.7 (18.2 ± 0.6)
