Introduction

The Black-billed Treehunter is a generally uncommon Thripadectes that is unique in having a scaly throat and virtually unstreaked underparts; the mantle is marked by pale buff shaft-streaks. It is very similar to the partially sympatric Striped Treehunter (Thripadectes holostictus), but the latter is much more obviously streaked below. The Black-billed Treehunter ranges over the eastern Andes from central Colombia to southernmost Peru, and like congenerics is dependent on montane evergreen forest, in this case mainly at 1000–1700 m, where it inhabits the understory. The species’ general rarity has undoubtedly contributed to the fact that its ecology is very poorly known.
