  • (1)Known-sex birds are adults (≥32 mo of age) captured on Alaskan breeding grounds (Nulato Hills and Neva Creek); "sexes combined" are birds from Northwestern Hawaiian Is. (Marks 1993, JSM). Note: Hawaiian Is. birds include those ≥19 mo of age, but ongoing analyses of these data (C. Handel and JSM unpubl.) suggest growth of structural parts is still occurring, especially in birds between 19 and 30 mo of age, but also in some older birds, so caution is warranted in any comparisons of values between breeding and nonbreeding birds. Sex of breeding birds determined from gonadal inspection (1 female), sex-specific molecular markers (after Griffiths et al. 1998; 36 males, 33 females), and both (2 males, 1 female). Measurements of wing = chord; total head = from back of skull to tip of culmen; culmen = exposed culmen; curved culmen = length measured with flexible rule along curved surface; tarsus = diagonal tarsus (see Higgins and Davies 1996: 17).
  • (2)Mass data as follows: breeding season for known-sex birds (as above) from Nulato Hills and Neva Creek, late Jun–late Jul (REG, BJM, TLT); autumn residency (Oct–Nov) and spring departure (late Apr–early May) from unsexed birds in Northwestern Hawaiian Is. (Marks 1993, JSM); autumn residency includes birds ≥28 mo old and spring departure birds ≥34 mo old.
