Systematics History

Phoenicura rubeculoides Vigors, 1831, Proceedings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society of London 1(3):35. Type locality given as "Himalayas" (9).

Synonym:

Niltava Brevipes Hodgson, 1837, The India Review and Journal of Foreign Science and the Arts 2:650 (10). Type locality listed as Nepal (11).

Muscicapa rubecola Swainson, 1838, The Naturalist's Library 21:221 (11).

Distribution

Himalayas from northeastern Pakistan (Murree Hills) east to northeastern India (Arunachal Pradesh and southern Assam hills south to Mizoram), southeastern Tibet, and western, northern, and northeastern Myanmar; non-breeding southern India (principally Western Ghats), Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and southern Myanmar.

Systematics History

Cyornis rubeculoides rogersi Robinson and Kinnear, 1928, Novitates Zoologicae 34:233. Type locality given as "Aracan. Lat. 18°–19°. N. Long. 95° E." (12).

Distribution

Southwestern Myanmar.

Field Identification

Subspecies rogersi male has upperparts slightly brighter, less deep blue, than nominate, side of head darker, darker orange-rufous on breast extends as triangle to center of throat (occasionally to base of bill), undertail coverts often tinged buffish. Female has warmer brown upperparts and deep or rich orange-rufous breast and flanks.
