Introduction

The Chestnut-collared Swallow (Petrochelidon rufocollaris) resides over open country and around towns in southwestern Ecuador and western Peru. It is distinguishable from similar species by its deep rufous-chestnut collar and forehead. Two subspecies are recognized: P. r. rufocollaris, in the Peruvian portion of the range of the species, and P. r. aequatorialis in Ecuador. Chestnut-collared Swallows are gregarious; they feed on aerial insects in flocks and are colonial breeders. During the breeding season (January-August), they construct enclosed mud nests on cliffs or under building eaves. The Chestnut-collared Swallow is not threatened. In Ecuador the species is thought to have increased because of its novel appearance in urban sites.
