Introduction
Although their long legs and short tails suggest terrestrial habits, gnateaters instead spend most of their time in low branches of the forest undergrowth. They sometimes sit motionless for a minute or so, but otherwise their movements are frenetic. They dart about, flicking their wings and tails, jump to every new position on a perch, and pounce to the ground to capture prey. They may stay there only long enough to flutter up in pursuit of prey from overhanging vegetation. Most species seem to have a wide variety of calls, from single syllables to accelerating trills, with notes as varied as gutteral whistles and sibilant shrieks.
