Introduction

The Cozumel Vireo remains fairly common on the island of the same name off Mexico’s Yucatan coast, despite not inconsiderable habitat loss due to natural events (hurricanes) and tourist development. On the island, it prefers scrubby woodland, second growth and abandoned farmland, but amazingly little has been published concerning the species’ biology. The most striking field marks are the Cozumel Vireo’s largely brown upperparts and head, and obvious white loral patch, while the bill often appears curiously large compared to the bird’s overall size. Like many other vireos, the Cozumel Vireo is probably most likely to be detected initially by virtue of its vocalizations.
