Distribution
Introduction
Endemic to New Guinea, where the species is confined to the montane forests of the central highlands, from the central Owen Stanley Range (Mts. Knutsford, Musgrave, Victoria, and Tafa) on the southeast peninsula of Papua New Guinea, northwestwards to the Kaijende Highlands, Mt. Giluwe, and the Mt. Hagen region; also at least as far as Jabogema, north of Lake Habbema in the upper Ibele Valley, in Indonesian New Guinea (8, 15). It has been speculated that Crested Satinbird can be expected to occur as far west as the Weyland Mts., in Indonesian New Guinea, as well as in the Star Mts., on the Indonesia/Papua New Guinea border (which currently represents a lacuna within the known range), and in southeast Papua it should be searched for on Mt. Nisbet, even on Mt. Suckling and Dayman (8, 15).
Historical Changes to the Distribution
None definitely known; records in Indonesian New Guinea are relatively recent, but presumably indicate only that the species was long overlooked there, despite considerable historical work (8).
