Breeding

Phenology

Pair Formation

Along the upper Anadyr River, pairs were already formed and defending territories as of 5 May (18).

Nest-Building

No information available.

First Brood

Egg-laying occurs mostly from May into June (41).

Second/Later Broods

No information available.

Nest Site

Nests are made in natural cavities, or those excavated by woodpeckers, in trees up to 20 m above the ground (41).

Nest

Very limited data. Along the upper Anadyr River, a pair used a hole that in which a Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) had successfully nested the previous summer, adjusting the entrance size by smearing the edges with clay (18).

Eggs

Clutch typically consists of 5–9 eggs (41). No information available about size, shape, color, mass, etc.

Incubation

The incubation period is ca. 15 days (41). Likely only the female incubates the eggs, as is true for the Eurasian Nuthatch, Sitta europaea, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis, White-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta carolinensis and Pygmy Nuthatch, Sitta pygmaea (54, 55, 56,7, 47).

Hatching

No information available.

Young Birds

Likely born altricial and nidicolous, as is true for Red-breasted Nuthatch, Sitta canadensis and Pygmy Nuthatch, Sitta pygmaea (55, 57).

Parental Care

Likely both parents feed the young, as is true for the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), Red-breasted Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, and Pygmy Nuthatch (54, 55, 56,7, 47).

Cooperative Breeding

No information available.

Brood Parasitism

No information available.

Fledgling Stage

The nestling period is ca. 18–22 days, and young are largely independent after a further 8–14 days (41). Shortly after fledging, juveniles have about the same mass as adults (18). Shortly after becoming independent, they have been noted to form flocks consisting largely of juveniles (18).

Behavior After Independence

No information available.
