Diet and Foraging
Introduction
There are virtually no specific data. This species is presumed to forage in a fashion similar to that of many nuthatches, and it is known to feed on the seeds of Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica) and presumably feeds on a variety of small arthropods as well.
Feeding
The Siberian Nuthatch typically feeds singly or in pairs (7), though it is known to feed in single-species flocks as well (18) and likely joins mixed-species flocks, as does the Eurasian Nuthatch (Sitta europaea), the White-tailed Nuthatch (Sitta himalayensis), and the Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) during the non-breeding season (44, 7, 45). Methods of foraging have not been specifically described, but this species likely forages by moving along tree trunks (often upside down) and branches while probing crevices in bark, beneath flakes of bark, and at the bases of needle clusters on conifers in search of arthropods, and by probing conifer cones for seeds as is common among nuthatch species such as the Siberian Nuthatch, the Red-breasted Nuthatch, the Pygmy Nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea), and the White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) (46, 7, 47).
Diet
No specific data. Presumably the diet consists mostly of arthropods and conifer seeds (41).
Food Selection and Storage
No specific data. The Siberian Nuthatch probably stores seeds in bark crevices and other similar locations for later use, as do many other nuthatches, such as the Eurasian Nuthatch, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and the Pygmy Nuthatch (48, 49, 7).
