Introduction

Despite its name, the Giant Wren shares the distinction of being the world’s largest wren with the similarly sized Bicolored Wren (Campylorhynchus griseus) of northern South America. As its scientific name suggests, the Giant Wren is endemic to the southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas, where the species is found in semi-open wooded areas including farmland. The crown and nape are black with a long white supercilium, while the mantle and wings are deep rufous, the tail black with white markings, and the underparts are largely clean white, with the exception of the buff-colored ventral region.
