Introduction
Formerly often considered to be conspecific with Black-striped Sparrow (Arremonops conirostris), the Green-backed Sparrow is restricted to southeastern Mexico, Belize, northern Guatemala, and western Honduras. The distributions of Green-backed and Black-striped sparrows approach one another in central Honduras, but there is apparently no contact between them. However, the Green-backed Sparrow does overlap in range with the much more widespread Olive Sparrow (Arremonops rufivirgatus), but differs in its brighter green back, and black striped gray head (the head stripes are brown in Olive Sparrow). In plumage and behavior, Green-backed Sparrow is a typical member of its genus. The taxonomy of the entire genus Arremonops is in need of re-evaluation and revision.
