Jungle Prinia Prinia sylvatica Scientific name definitions

One of the larger members of its genus, and the largest in Peninsular India, the Jungle Prinia is characteristic of thorn scrub and grassy scrub in rocky and hilly areas across peninsular and northwest India, and parts of Nepal. Early reports from Bangladesh are considered unconfirmed, and there are no recent reports of the species there. In the breeding season, its stout black bill and characteristic song render it unmistakeable, but non-breeding birds are challenging to separate from the similar Plain Prinia (Prinia inornata), unless they are vocalizing. It favors undisturbed scrub jungle, and, like many other Indian birds, is largely understudied. This account highlights what is known of the species' biology, including priorities for future research.
