Systematics History

Monarcha (Piezorhynchus) browni E. P. Ramsay, 1882, Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1882:711—“Marrabo” [= New Georgia], Solomon Islands. (4)

The holotype, an adult male collected on 21 April 1864 by the Reverend George Brown (1835–1917), is held in the Australian Museum, Sydney (AM O.18729) (5).

Distribution

Kolombangara, New Georgia, Vangunu, and adjacent islands (southwestern Solomon Islands).

Systematics History

Monarcha kulambangrae meeki Rothschild and Hartert, 1905, Novitates Zoologicae 12:262.—Rendova. (6)

The holotype, an adult male collected on 23 February 1904 by Albert Stewart Meek (1871–1943), is held in the American Museum of Natural History, New York (AMNH 655014), as are the following specimens (all from the same source) identified as paratypes: males, AMNH 655018, 7 February, AMNH 655019, 19 February, AMNH 655020, 14 February, AMNH 655021, 6 February; females, AMNH 655022, 24 February, AMNH 655023, 23 February, and AMNH 655024, 14 February (7).

Distribution

Rendova and Tetepare, south of New Georgia (southwestern Solomon Islands).

Field Identification

Subspecies meeki differs from the nominate in that it has less white in the outer tail feathers.
