Introduction

The Lineated Barbet is a large barbet, closely related to the Brown-headed Barbet (Psilopogon zeylanicus), which replaces it in lowland and peninsular India as well as Sri Lanka. The Lineated Barbet occurs from the Himalayan foothills and eastern India (where its range abuts that of the Brown-headed Barbet), through northeast India, Bangladesh, and mainland Southeast Asia (the subspecies hodgsoni). The nominate subspecies occurs in Java and Bali. The Lineated Barbet tends to occupy forest edges as well as more deciduous habitats, and tends to be less common in dense evergreen forest. It is also tolerant of anthropogenic modifications to its habitat, occurring in villages, orchards, and even urban areas where fruiting trees are present. Generally a common bird throughout its range, the Lineated Barbet even appears to be expanding its range in some areas.
