Divya Mudappa is a Senior Scientist with the Nature Conservation Foundation, India. Her primary research interests are in the field of tropical ecology, particularly of rainforests, with emphasis on plant-animal interactions, restoration ecology, and conservation biology. She is particularly interested in the ecology and conservation of hornbills and small carnivores. The broad goal of her research is to improve the scientific understanding of the patterns and processes in tropical ecosystems and to use this knowledge for nature conservation.

T. R. Shankar Raman is a Senior Scientist with the Nature Conservation Foundation, India. His primary area of research has been the ecology and conservation of tropical forests, particularly their plant, bird, and mammal communities. His areas of interest include conservation biology, ecological restoration, and habitat and population monitoring. He is the author of The Wild Heart of India: Nature and Conservation in the City, the Country, and the Wild. He writes on ecology, natural history, and conservation for a wide audience through popular science articles, creative nonfiction essays, and blogs.

The authors have been observing and studying hornbills in the Western Ghats since 1993.
