Resident, apparently sedentary and not given to wide-ranging movements such as between isolated and fragmented habitat patches. The species was earlier thought to be tolerant of habitat disturbance and capable of flying between isolated forest fragments (17, 5), but seed dispersal studies in Karnataka of a rainforest tree, Dysoxylum malabaricum, almost exclusively dispersed by the Malabar Gray Hornbill suggests that 95% of the seeds are dispersed less than 200 m from the parent tree in that study site (23). This may also indicate that the hornbill may be relatively sedentary and therefore could be negatively impacted by forest fragmentation.
The hornbills may show local movements to deciduous forests adjoining moist forests tracking food resources such as fruiting Ficus figs (DM and TRSR, personal observations).
Dispersal and Site Fidelity
Breeding birds appear to show nest site fidelity in that the same nest trees may be re-used for many years (see Breeding: Nest Site).
Non-migratory and sedentary, but can show local movements (see Movement).
