Introduction

Breeding Sites

In Peru, breeds in the Paracas Peninsula (Ica and Isla vieja; 26, 27), and Pampa Pie de Candela (28). In Chile, breeds in Pampa Chuño, Pampa La Higuera, Pampa Chaca, Pampa Camarones, Pampa Jarza, Pampa Tana, Salar de Quiuña, Caleta Buena, Pampa Hermosa, Salar Grande, Loa, and Salar Navidad (29, 30, 31, 23, 32, 33, 34). Other breeding localities probably exist, especially in southern Peru and near Pica (eBird S18031705).

Marine Range

At sea, it favors the cool waters of the Humboldt current off Peru and northern Chile but can range much farther, having occurred between the latitudes of 18°N (off-Mexico) and 30°S (off-Chile, 1), and as far west as 118.02°W (35). In the austral autumn, the highest densities have been documented just offshore from central Peru. In the austral spring, some high densities remain off southern Peru and northern Chile, but an even higher concentration also congregates about 1,700 km west of there (35, 36). In the austral autumn, birds are 74.63 km from the coast on average (range: 17.03-183.71 km), whereas in the austral spring, birds average 105.37 km from the coast (range: 10.92-209.09 km).

Extralimital Records

A grounded bird was recorded in Valparaíso, Chile, far from its regular range (eBird S29422372). Also, one individual was recorded in La Paz, Bolivia, but it is unknown whether it was transported by humans or was a genuine vagrant (37).
