Introduction

The Mindanao Serin is a distinctive finch (unrelated to the Serinus serins, despite its English name) with extensive yellow underparts and a blunt bill. It is a scarce (or at least rarely observed) species, confined to two montane areas in the center of Mindanao—Mt. Kitinglad and Mt. Apo (the Philippines). While in the past it has been lumped with the Indonesian Serin (Chrysocorythus estherae) under the name "Mountain Serin Chrysocorythus estherae," it has frequently been treated as a separate species since its discovery, including by its describers. Given this species’ elusiveness and confinement to remote areas (it was only discovered on Mindanao as recently as 1960), there are no available breeding, behavioral, or diet data for this species, and additional populations in other areas of Mindanao may remain to be discovered.
