El Northern Fantail es una especie muy politípica que está extendida por el norte de Australia, Nueva Guinea, las Molucas, las Sundas menores, el archipiélago de Bismarck, la isla de Biak y el archipiélago de Louisiade. Es residente en la mayor parte de su área de distribución, pero existen algunos movimientos locales, posiblemente relacionados con la lluvia o la elevación, en algunas poblaciones de Australia. Al ser una especie tan extendida y politípica, es probable que Northern Fantail pueda dividirse en varias especies. De hecho, ya se han reconocido algunas especies (véase Cola de canela[R. fuscorufa] y Brown-capped Fantail [R. diluta]), pero algunas autoridades han dividido Northern Fantail, tal como se reconoce aquí, en hasta 9 especies.
