Introduction

The Ochre-breasted Brush-Finch is restricted to the northern Andes, including the Eastern Andes of Colombia and the Andes of Venezuela. Although restricted in its range, it shows a great variety of geographic variation with variants on different slopes of the Andes, and different spots along the Andes, six subspecies are recognized. The Ochre-breasted Brush-Finch may have been better called the ochre-headed as the entire head is ochre and this coloration continues to the throat and breast. Otherwise it is greenish above and yellowish below with varying olive wash on the flanks. The various forms differ in how color saturated they are, some much darker than others and the palest showing nearly a white throat and pale yellowish breast. This brush-finch forms a superspecies with the Tepui Brush-Finch; the two are amongst the few brush-finches that lack blackish colors on the head.
