Introduction

Ornate Tinamou is a typical member of the high Andean genus Nothoprocta. This species inhabits high elevation steppes, especially hills dominated by bunch grass, at 3500-4800 m, from central Peru south through Bolivia to Argentina and Chile. If seen from afar before flushing, the Ornate Tinamou appears to be a fairly bland combination of earth tones. When observed at close range, however, Ornate Tinamou proves to live up to its name: the species is quite attractive, being heavily patterned with white edgings and bandings across the back and wings.
