Introduction
Endemic to southwest Ecuador and the west Peruvian littoral, the Parrot-billed Seedeater is a relatively unusual species amongst the genus Sporophila in that females are probably equally identifiable by their relatively massive, pale bill. This is somewhat yellowish in males, but more horn-colored in females. In breeding plumage, males somewhat recall the much more widespread Double-collared Seedeater (Sporophila caerulescens), with which there is no geographical overlap, but differs in the much broader black breast band, and in having extensive white wing markings. The birds breed during the wet season, which falls during the first half of the year, and there is sometimes noticeable seasonal variation in the species’ numbers.
