Introduction

Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrants are a familiar sight in the high Andes, from the Venezuelan/Colombian border south to central Bolivia. This chat-tyrant inhabits open habitats, such as the edges of humid montane and elfin forests, and humid Polylepis forests. They often forage in pairs. They are conspicuous birds, often perching in the open atop small bushes, and attracting further attention with frequent calls. Across its wide range the Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant exhibits only a modest amount of geographic variation in plumage, primarily in the color of the upperparts and in the presence or absence of wingbars. The southernmost subspecies, rufipectoralis of southern Peru and Bolivia, is gray above and lacks wingbars; other subspecies have rufous wingbars, and their upperparts tend to be browner. The Rufous-breasted Chat-Tyrant is superficially similar to several other species of chat-tyrant that have a bold white supercilium, such as the widespread White-browed Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca leucophrys) or the range-restricted Piura Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca piurae), but easily is distinguished by the namesake rufous patch on the breast.
