This species is resident throughout most of its breeding range, but withdraws from northernmost portions during most winters. Most remaining populations exhibit irruptive movements, typically in alternate years that coincide with a poor crop of conifer seeds on the breeding grounds. During irruptive years individuals may winter outside of the breeding range south of the distribution shown.
