Red-fan Parrot Deroptyus accipitrinus Scientific name definitions

Though parrots in general are unremarkable for their use of dynamic plumages, the Red-Fan Parrot is exceptional for its ability to erect elongated red feathers, with purple tips, forming a spectacular mane which frames the head. Certainly a very desirable species to see, despite its pan-Amazonian distribution, the Red-fan Parrot is fairly rare in undisturbed terra firme forest. It is most often seen perched high on bare branches and with its long tail, can strike a decidedly raptor-like posture which is reflected in its species epithet, accipitrinus.
