Introduction

A handsome and shy bird, the Red-winged Francolin is locally common but patchily distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It is found in grassland areas at higher altitudes, where it is typically observed in small parties foraging for bulbs and corms. While it is similar in appearance to many other francolins throughout its distribution, it is best distinguished by its broader black-and-white scaled breast band and by the pattern of its head and neck.
