Introduction

The distinctiveness of the Perija Antpitta, from other, formerly conspecific members of the Grallaria rufula complex, has never been doubted. Its drab brownish upperparts and pale whitish underparts are, in fact, so different from most others in the rufula complex, that it has been speculated to be a subspecies of Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis). Perija Antpitta has a very small range that, as its vernacular name suggests, is confined to the Perija Mountains on the Colombia-Venezuelan border. Its nesting habits, as well as all aspects of its general ecology and natural history remain very poorly known.
