Introduction

The small, sprightly Rufous-fronted Prinia is a characteristic denizen of dry-scrub and semiarid habitats of northern and western Pakistan through north-central India. Its rapid movements and drab plumage can make it difficult to separate from the Plain Prinia (P. inornata), which shares the same habitats; however, the song and white tail-tips of the Rufous-fronted Prinia set it apart, as does its characteristic rollicking song. This species is more terrestrial than other members of the genus, and is more likely to be seen feeding on the ground. The southwest monsoon breeding season is the best time to find this species, as it can be observed singing from the top of a bush or small tree. Like many other birds of grassland and scrub habitats, the Rufous-fronted Prinia is likely to be in decline across its range, yet there is very little known of its biology. This account discusses the little information that exists, and highlights urgent priorities for future research and monitoring.
