Introduction

The Rufous Wren is a distinctive bird with a somewhat babbler-like appearance. Primarily rufous-brown, becoming paler over the head and neck, and finely barred darker on the wings and tail, it inhabits wet montane forest in the Andes from southwest Venezuela south to northern Peru. Pairs and small family groups, which in turn frequently join mixed-species foraging flocks, are often found in relatively close proximity or within clumps of Chusquea bamboo. The Rufous Wren is generally reasonably common within its altitudinal range, of 2200–3800 m, but despite this comparatively few data are available concerning its ecology. Three subspecies are recognized, and these generally differ in their overall coloration.
