Introduction
A smaller and comparatively widespread species of Eurylaimidae, the Silver-breasted Broadbill is one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic forest birds with a distribution that spans from Myanmar and China through Mainland Southeast Asia and Peninular Malaysia to Sumatra. With such an extensive range (one of the largest of any broadbill), it is considered here to comprise no fewer than nine subspecies, although many of these are ill-defined, and some authors prefer more conservative arrangements. Its attractive combination of gray, black, blue, and rufous plumage render it unmistakable, although it is behaviorally unobtrusive. It perches quietly in the forest midstory, occasionally making short sallies to catch prey. Its large nest is often very conspicuous, and observations suggest that helpers may be involved in its construction, as well as in provisioning the young.
