Juvenile Plumage

Definitive Basic (Adult) Plumage

Adult males have the top of the head crimson running back over nape to mantle, feathers of mantle with pale-yellow tips, rest of upperparts black with a longitudinal central band of white feathers tapering at the uppertail coverts; upperwing and uppertail blackish, dull olive-green edging on outer webs of primaries, remiges with broad yellowish-white area on inner webs, underwing coverts mostly pale yellow; some long black bristles around base of bill, white superciliary stripe above and behind eye, black mask from lowermost forehead through face just above the eye and down to cheek and ear coverts linking with black neckside; submoustachial area down to chin, throat and foreneck white or creamy white, a complete crimson band across breast extending back to sides and flanks, upper flanks with variable amount of black or dark gray admixed, abdomen and undertail coverts white with slight cream-yellow tinge, more noticeably yellow where bordering with the red areas. Females differ from males only in having some white spots in black below eye, and buff to yellow or white marks forming a line on outer scapulars; one female with several black spots at lower edge of red breastband.

Steel gray or bluish gray with duskier gray on tomia and tip.

Iris and Facial Skin

Iris is carmine. Orbital skin is gray black.

Slaty gray.

  • Culmen - females, 15.1–17.3 mm; males, 15.5–16.5 mm (2).
  • Bill depth - females, 10.6–10.8 mm; males, 9.3–12.0 mm (2).
  • Wing - females, 93.3–97.6 mm; males, 90.4–94.9 mm (2).
  • Tail - females, 53–58 mm; males, 55–58 mm (2).
  • Tarsus - 24.2–25.8 mm; males, 24.2–26.2 mm (2).

Mass

  • Males - 70–73 g (2).
  • Females - 70–78 g (2).
