Population Status

Locally fairly common. Recorded only in narrow altitudinal band on outlying ridges in and on boundary of Sira Communal Reserve, within very small range of less than 300 km2, where probably present continuously at appropriate elevations. If it does not extend to western slope or northern part of the Cerros del Sira, its complete global range thought likely to be less than 710 km2 (7). Mapping of this range yields an estimated Extent of Occurrence of c.500 km2. Using congeners as a guide permits a preliminary population estimate of 1,000–2,499 mature individuals (7). In 2025, the Sira Barbet was documented at higher elevations and on the western slope of the Sira (6; S. Llactahuaman, eBird), but the extent of occurrence has not yet been reestimated.
