Systematics History

Capito fitzpatricki Seeholzer, Winger, Harvey, Cáceres, and Weckstein, 2012, The Auk 129(3) p. 552.—Type Locality: "11.45 km west-southwest of the mouth of Quebrada Shinipo, Cerros del Sira, Región Ucayali, Peru (10°31′48′′S, 74°07′12′′W); elevation 1,050 m" (2).

Sometimes considered conspecific with Scarlet-banded Barbet (Capito wallacei) (3, 4).

Geographic Variation

None reported.

Subspecies

Monotypic.

Related Species

Sister-species of Scarlet-banded Barbet; the two differing genetically and in plumage and morphology. Mitochondrial DNA indicates low sequence divergence, suggesting that they have differentiated relatively recently; morphological evidence (2); however, is conclusive, Capito wallacei showing red (not yellow) flanks (3), broader breast band (a plumage character, not a morphometric one; effect size 3.335, score 2), deeper bill (effect size 3.744, score 2), and black vs gray outer thigh feathers (1). It is probably also closely related to White-mantled Barbet (Capito hypoleucus), Five-colored Barbet (Capito quinticolor), and Black-spotted Barbet (Capito niger) (5).

Hybridization

None reported.

Fossils

None reported.
