Systematics History

Tylas eduardi Hartlaub 1862 (2: page 152); type locality Alanamasaotra (3: page 273) [18º56' S 48º25'E: 4].

Tylas alfredi Sharpe 1881 (5: page 165), Tylas fulviventris Sharpe 1881 (5: page 165), and Tylas strophiatus Stejneger 1879 (6: page 182), all considered by some earlier authors to be separate species (e.g., 5, 7), now are considered to be synonyms of nominate eduardi (8, 9, 10).

Distribution

Eastern Madagascar (from the Andapa area south to Andohahela).

Tylas Vanga (White-throated) Tylas eduardi albigularis Scientific name definitions

Systematics History

Tylas albigularis Schleg. [= Hartlaub] 1877 (11: page 143). Type locality Mouroundava [= Morondava; 4).

Distribution

Western Madagascar, patchily from Baly Baly (west of Mahajanga) south to near the Mangoky River.

Field Identification

Similar to nominate eduardi, but black of head slightly browner, and restricted to a cap, extending to the lores and auriculars: the lower sides of the head, chin, and throat buffy white. Breast and belly usually pale cinnamon (paler than nominate eduardi). Greater underwing coverts almost white. See also Geographic Variation.
