Introduction
The Violet-fronted Brilliant is a large, dark hummingbird of Andean cloud forests. Both sexes are green overall, but only the male has a violet crown. The female has dull whitish underparts heavily speckled with green and a white malar mark. This species occurs in humid montane forest across a broad elevational range in the Andes from Venezuela south to Bolivia. It forages at flowers in the mid-story and often flycatches for aerial insects. There is little information on the breeding behavior of this species.
