Introduction

The Yellow-crowned Euphonia is endemic to southern Central America, mainly from northern Nicaragua to southern Panama, over both slopes of the isthmus, although there are also a few records from southern and eastern Honduras. It is rarely recorded above 900 m and it inhabits semi-open areas with scattered trees, as well as dry scrub, and is usually encountered in pairs or small flocks, like many congenerics. It regularly joins aggregations of other frugivores at fruiting trees. The male is mainly blue-black above and over the throat, with an extensive yellow cap, and is also yellow below, while the female is mainly olive-colored above, with yellow central underparts.
