Introduction

This hemispingus ranges from northern Peru south to central Bolivia, entirely over the east slope of the Andes, where it is principally found in small groups of four to five individuals that form the nucleus within mixed-species flocks. Its elevational range chiefly spans 2900 to 3500 m and the species inhabits montane forest and its borders. Principally brown above, and rather buffish below, this Hemispingus has blackish head sides and a well contrasting white supercilium, and might be momentarily confused with both the Black-eared Hemispingus (Hemispingus melanotis) and the Orange-browed Hemispingus (Hemispingus calophrys), but it differs in several features from either. The Three-striped Hemispingus is generally uncommon over much of its range.
